Unlike negotiating for the use of your parents’ car, a college paper is not the place for an all-out blitz of every type of argument. You can often use more than one type of evidence within a paper, but make sure that within each section you are providing the reader with evidence appropriate to each claim.

You may be surprised to hear that the word “argument” does not have to be written anywhere in your assignment for it to be an important part of your task. In fact, making an argument—expressing a point of view on a subject and supporting it with evidence—is often the aim of academic writing.

Therefore, the argumentative essay must be complete, and logically so, leaving no doubt as to its intent or argument. A common method for writing an argumentative essay is the five-paragraph approach. This is, however, by no means the only formula for writing such essays.

The content will vary, but these passages are generally the same in the quality and type of writing. They're arguments intended for a general audience and should not be overly technical or difficult to understand.
